Ch. 4 – Psalm 23 – Simple Steps to Choosing a Color Palette

Discovering the Hope of the Lord’s Good Care…

Chapter 4 of Discovering Hope in the Psalms “A Creative Bible Experience” is all about Psalm 23 and the hope we have from knowing the Lord as our Shepherd. This Psalm is considered a song of confidence because it clearly declares confidence in the Lord’s care for us as His beloved sheep. Even though I did not grow up in the church, I can totally understand why little one’s are encouraged to memorize Psalm 23 in Sunday School or vacation Bible Camp. Hiding this Psalm in your heart… or any other verse for that matter… allows God to bring it to your mind to encourage your heart whenever you need it the most!

The visual imagery in Psalm 23 makes it ideal for both memorizing and for creating scripture art in your Bible or art journal or even on a canvas. And oh my… I just had the most wonderful vision of a Psalm 23 quilt! Can you see it? Probably… just because the imagery is so delightful. The word pictures so powerful. We are invited to walk as sheep with our Shepherd Jesus through lush green pastures filled with flowers… I imagine daisies swaying in the wind… and we are beckoned to lie down and rest along the banks of a gently flowing stream. If I close my eyes for a moment, take a deep breath and imagine myself there, a peace comes over me… the peace of knowing that I am in the Lord’s care. Okay… your turn!

If you’re tracing the bookmark into your Bible and it has the more open space like mine does… consider creative ways to draw the design out into the page. Try adding some extra flourishes. Or slide the bookmark around under your page to duplicate the flowers and the butterfly as I did in my Bible shown above. Just remember… while you’re tracing and coloring to take some deep breathes and remember that God’s watching over you to keep you safe and give you rest no matter what your circumstances! You can find more tracing instruction and inspiration here.

I hope you love the coloring pages that I created for this chapter but when it comes to coloring, I’m often asked “where do I start?” or “how do I choose a color palette?” This particular coloring page and bookmark provide a great visual to answer that question. As for me… I normally do not choose my entire color palette before beginning to color. I have found that the simplest way to begin is with what you already know. Coloring my leaves green is always the easiest place for me to begin. Maybe a variety of greens but, most often, I want them green so that’s where I start. Now in this image we have a pasture which is also green so I chose to make my pasture light green and my leaves darker green and alternate the greens as I move up the picture. Or you could be even more creative and color every “stripe” of grass a different shade of green!!

What else do we see when we look at this page? We have water! Now we’re not talking about the muddy Mississippi so I’m guessing, like me, you’re imagining blues… maybe more aqua or maybe soft baby blues but we typically “see” water as blue. So I’ll do that next. In this case, I’ve striped the water in the image for some creative fun so I alternated light and dark blue but again you could add a variety of blues and go from light to dark at the horizon line. Okay… I see a potential problem where the water meets the sky but I’ve already decided to start at the skyline with purple and blend it up into a light blue behind the lettering.

So the whole point is to start with what you already know! With this in mind… once you color in what you already know you’ll get a better view of the entire picture and then you can simply have fun choosing the rest of the colors! Your flowers could be pink, purple, yellow, or red and then that will help you decide what color is going to work best for the border and the butterflies. One step at a time. Simple choices.

Just for fun I created this short little video while I finished coloring the coordinating note card…

If you own the Bible study, Discovering Hope in the Psalms, you already have the full page coloring page and the bookmark design. If you don’t have the book and just want the coloring page and bookmark… I created a digital printable collection which includes a note card as well. I thought it might be a sweet way to share a personalized and hand-colored word of comfort and hope with someone you know. You can find it here in my Etsy shop.

I create my scripture printables with five bookmarks on a sheet with the hope that you will share them freely. Invite some friends over and have a coloring party! Or share them with your Bible Study women or children’s Sunday school class. And I love the idea of passing them out to nursing homes… a lot of women there LOVE to color.

I hope you’ll take to the time to memorize this verse while you’re coloring it so God can bring it to your mind whenever you need it the most!

    Karla,
Last year some ladies from our church, First Missionary Baptist Church of Auburndale, Florida, wrote cards and included a small gift to the widows of persecuted Christians. Our small group was only able to send out 150 cards. This year we are shooting for 200-300. The organizer of the project wants to send out over 3,000. Last year we included small painted mandalas. I have already created about 60 of these, but I thought that a bookmark would be something they would see over and over while they were reading their bibles. Do you have something in color that we would be able to use at a nominal cost? I have tassels to attach to them. I would appreciate if you could help us. Thank you.

Merry Christmas my friends!! Jesus came as the Pr Merry Christmas my friends!!

Jesus came as the Prince of Peace but He also came as the King of Kings! He was not born to become a King… He already was one. It is almost unfathomable to consider that His royal reign as Prince and King began long before He entered this world.

Even more amazing is that He was willing to lay aside His heavenly robes and put on the humble garment of human flesh for us… for you and me.

The King walked among us so we could see Him and touch Him. So we could know Him and love Him. So we could believe in Him and allow Him to rule and reign over our hearts in love and peace.

Jesus is King… He always has been and always will be… and He was born in a manger so we could know that His Kingdom is not about what we have or what we don’t have. It’s not about wearing royal robes or buying expensive gifts. God‘s Kingdom is about putting on the garments of love and humility and giving ourselves to care for others. That’s what Jesus did and he became like us so we could become like him. That’s the Christmas we celebrate.

I pray your celebration overflows with the love and peace that Christ came to give us.

Love you my friends xoxo

Thank You Lord! Life has been a bit crazy the past Thank You Lord! Life has been a bit crazy the past week or so but I’m so thankful God is with us in the crazy as well as the calm! Amen?

I just added these full color printable bookmarks to my Etsy shop. The “color your own” version has been available for a while but I finally set my heart to recreate them in color and I’m so happy with how they turned out! I was thinking how nice they might be at each place setting as you gather family and friends for Thanksgiving. Or even as a small way of saying thank you to the women who show up for your Bible study or book club every week. I love being able to create things that help you share your faith and glorify the Lord!

It’s been good timing for me to stay focused on these verses too. I’ve been struggling with neck and back pain again and wanting to stay thankful as I’m now working with a pain doctor and physical therapist. Plus life has just felt so hard lately. Challenges in every direction. I’ll spare you the details because I’m guessing you have your own list. Right?

But the amazing thing about God’s Word is that has the potential to change our hearts and minds… if we let it. If we count our blessings… we discover the blessings far outnumber the hard things… and our hearts are stirred to give thanks! And… if we let the hard things actually draw us closer to the Lord… that’s another blessing… and we become even more thankful knowing that He is with us in the midst of it all.

So… even though I’ve disappointed in myself for not showing up here as much as I’d like to… I’m thankful I get to at all!! And thankful for those of you who are joining me on the same crazy faith adventure!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Amen? Amen!

Love you my friends! xoxo

PS… you can find this printable collection in my Etsy shop. The link is in my bio. Thank you for your love and support!
I love my courtyard!! I would never have imagined I love my courtyard!! I would never have imagined living in such a unique and beautiful setting… so much more than I could have asked for or imagined… and God definitely gets all the glory! I still get teary eyed thinking about how good He has been to me here. My heart overflows with thanksgiving!

And that collection of outdoor furniture makes me so happy… and thankful! My daughter gave me one of the loveseats and a chair. I just needed to buy new cushions. But they come in pairs so I went on the hunt for another chair with the same size cushions and discovered it’s not a normal size. I kept praying and looking on FB Marketplace to no avail and came so close to buying a new one… which I only found one the right size so it wasn’t cheap. I kept praying and waiting. And I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was when I found this collection of another loveseat, two chairs, and the table. Yep… on FB Marketplace… all for only $150! Again… thank You Lord!! And… I was going to have to make two or three trips to get it all home but the sweetest seller offered to deliver it all for me for free… which, of course, I paid her for anyway. But another blessing! Blessing on top of blessing!!

They all need a fresh coat of paint… including the white glider which was already here… but so worth it. And I know God has not given me this place just for me… but to share with whoever He brings my way. I don’t know yet what that will look like but He does and I’m excited to see it unfold in the days ahead.

And from where I sit in the mornings for my quiet time, I get to enjoy all my feathered friends who come to visit! I’ll share more of them later.

So for today… I am grateful for how the Lord has turned my sorrow into joy… and in so many ways through His Presence and His provision… including my new life here in Tucson, AZ. Thank You Lord.

As you count your blessings today… how has God’s Presence and provision impacted your life lately? I’d love to know.

Love you my friends and thank you for being here and for allowing me to share this crazy God adventure together with you! xoxo
