Bible Journaling Basics… and a Little Inspiration too!

Illustrated Faith 01The response to my FB posts about my Bible Journaling has been such a blessing and so encouraging! Lots of love and also a few repeated questions… so I promised that this morning I would share a little of my Bible Journaling basics with you and the supplies I use… so here we are.

Many of you already know that I’ve been creatively expressing and sharing my love for God and His Word through my art and hand-lettering for a very long time… through books, wall art, and products… so when I discovered Bible Art Journaling you can just imagine how my heart leapt! I was so excited that God had led me to yet another way to creatively engage with Him and His Word as well as being another avenue to share Him and His Word to encourage others!

Choosing My Bible…

Illustrated Faith 02

Illustrated Faith 03I’ve been reading and studying from the same NIV Bible for over 30 years… WOW… so you can just imagine what it looks like… well-worn to the point of literally falling apart! So when I discovered this new Bible designed with wide side margins for journaling I knew it was time to lay aside the old for something new.

After doing my homework, I chose the ESV Single Column Journaling Bible published by Crossway. I already own lots of study Bibles in different translations and versions… but my go-to Bible has always been my NIV with no study aids at all. Sadly I couldn’t find a journaling Bible I liked in my version of choice but I’m getting used to and loving the ESV now… so all is well! (UPDATE: I now own an NIV Journaling Bible but still haven’t created any art in it!)

Choosing My Verse…

Illustrated Faith 04

The whole idea of Bible Journaling is to spend time with God in His Word so inspiration to choose a particular verse can come from any place where you’re hearing His heart and allowing it to speak to your soul. Your inspiration could be as random as hearing a song during church or on the radio and connecting with the words that you lead you to look up a particular verse. Inspiration might come during your Bible study time, while reading a devotional or hearing a sermon. Or it might be as delightful as being in the shower and having God bring a verse to your mind that He hid there years ago.

When my new Journaling Bible arrived… I had just started a reading plan through the book of Luke. I decided to read two pages at a time and only create art on the right hand page… mostly because even though the ink did not bleed through I was still distracted by the shadow it left on the backside of the left hand page.

As I read I pray and ask God to speak to my heart and the one verse that stands out above all others is the one I choose to design and hand-letter. And to be honest… the greatest challenge is usually narrowing it down to one verse!! But the joy of doing it this way for me is being able to meditate and reflect on this one verse… even memorizing it… as I move through the process from sketch to finished color.

My Creative Process…

After I choose my verse… comes the fun. I sometimes sketch directly in my Bible but I enjoy the process of creating so I usually play with ideas in my sketchbook before I transfer them, either freehand or by tracing, into my Bible. I find this time of playing very freeing because I’m not thinking about “what if I mess up?” It also gives me more time thinking about the verse… allowing it to settle into my heart, memorizing it, and allowing it to feed my soul.

I love creating with imagery related to the verse such as fruit for the fruit of the Spirit or the girl with her hands uplifted in worship. Hearts are another great visual example and they show up a lot in scripture and in my art!  But sometimes the greater blessing and challenge for me is designing with the words themselves. Reading a verse multiple times, putting the emphasis on a different word each time is a great way to visualize which words I want to create larger or with a bolder font or place within a frame or banner for more impact.

Finding Your Style…

There are as many different styles of Bible art journaling as there are women and personalities… and so it should be! If you are new to Bible journaling or thinking about it… just stay true to yourself! Be inspired by others but always do what makes your own heart sing! I hope mine will inspire you but don’t feel like you have to look like me. I was so impressed and inspired by the beautiful and super fun scrapbook style journaling I had seen online but I knew that wasn’t my style. Wanting to stay true to who I am and how God created and gifted me, I chose to stay in the margin and keep it simple. But if you love scrapbooking… and want to paint over the entire page I say go for it! I might try it some day myself!

Mine… at least for now… is all about hand-lettering and design. That’s who I am. That’s how God has wired me… it’s what I love to do… and it makes my heart happy.

Bottom line… it’s not about the style you choose… but it’s about using your journaling as an instrument of worship… time spent reflecting on and responding to God’s love for you and your love for Him… allowing His Word to soak into your soul during your Bible journaling moments. First and foremost it’s between you and your Lord. Amen.

Illustrated Faith 05

Choosing Your Supplies…

So regarding tools… I’m pretty simple really. I start with a normal #2 pencil, Kneaded Eraser, and of course… those cute little handy dandy close up glasses I can’t live without these days. If you’re not familiar with a kneaded eraser… it’s soft and pliable and can be formed into shapes that allow you to erase fine lines and small space. It’s also fun to play with… you just keep kneading it like bread and it envelops your graphite into itself… keeping it clean as you go along. I like it for Bible Journaling because the pages are fragile and this eraser is gentle but effective.

Illustrated Faith 06As I shared earlier… I generally do a light sketch first… either directly on the page or in my gridded sketchbook and then on the Bible page.  I look for key words and divisions in the verse that allow me to break it up into pieces… which is also beneficial when you’re meditating on a verse as well. I then play with ways to highlight them with banners or borders, etc.

Illustrated Faith 07

Illustrated Faith 08Once I like the layout… I use my Micron Pens to ink over my sketch… starting with the 005… and then erase the pencil lines and begin to add the fun details with the larger point microns. I also use a white Gel Pen to add highlights and whiten up certain words to make them pop.

Illustrated Faith 09Then it’s all about the color. Even though I’m excited about trying watercolors and markers in the future… I’m just having way to much fun with colored pencils right now. So my favorite colored pencils are Prismacolors because they are soft, the colors are clear and rich, and they layer and blend beautifully.

Illustrated Faith 10
This is my favorite color palette at the moment. Aren’t they gorgeous? And perfect for layering colors until I get the effect I’m loving.

TIP: One thing I have discovered is that I can tend to press a little too hard with the colored pencils thus leaving indentations on the page below so I’ve started slipping a piece of cardstock in between the pages at this stage.

I might add a little more white gel pen as a finishing touch… and ta-da… I have my finished design and more importantly… I have had some wonderful time delighting in the Lord and in His Word.

The Bible Journaling Blessing…

Psalm 1 tells us that if we want to live a blessed life… we need to delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night. Bible Journaling is a wonderfully creative way to enter into God’s presence, to worship Him through delighting in His Word and being transformed through it’s power as we meditate on His truth.

Love you and bless you… in the Name of Jesus!

    Thank you for sharing your journaling journey with us. I have enjoyed your FB posts that have shown your Bible. In fact, I may have been one of the ones to ask what Bible you had. 🙂 I am definitely going to be getting this Bible, my doodles may not look as beautiful as yours, but I sense they will beautify my heart just as much. Doodles can not go wrong if the Lord’s the Lord of them (a little paraphrase of a certain song…LOL). God bless your doodles, your journaling and your year of Change. {{{{HUGS}}}}

Thank you for the supply list. I use the Micron to make notes, but unfortunately I am not an artist. Thank you so much for sharing this display of your heart in your bible.

So excited to see some of your journaling sketches as digital downloads! I was hoping to be able to share them with some of the ladies that I send notes to. Thank you my friend!

Thank you for sharing your how-to process. I’m imagining that because the paper is so thin, the Micron inks must ‘bleed’ through on the back side? Regardless, your artwork is a lovely enhancement and delightful approach to meditating on specific verses of Scripture. May God continue to bless your talents.

This kind of Art is so beautiful. I am wondering what kind of pages your journal Bible has. Does it have thin paper like most Bibles, and if so, do the micron pens bleed through the pages at all? That would be a big concern of mine. Thank you for this wonderful idea. I want to try it.

    Karen,
I can not draw either, tho I keep trying. Have you considered doing stamping? You can then color them in as you like. Just a thought.

    Hi Karla,
I love your work. Have you ever considered making stamps to sell? I would love to use them in my journaling, since an artist I am not! I would also use them on my home made envelopes too! Just an idea for you to ponder! 😃

Karla, Thanks for sharing this inspiring post! What a beautiful concept…creating your worshipful, pliable heart along side your Creator as you immerse yourself in His Word! I’m grateful that you’re sharing with us through email again because I’m not on FB and have missed your wisdom, humor and talent!

That is what I worry about also…does using microns render the opposite page to be not usable to journal on.

My sister introduced me to Bible Journaling when she put a journaling Bible on her Christmas list. I purchased one for her, and when she came to visit me in Virginia for Christmas, she told us all about YOUR Bible journaling and showed me some of your work.
Yes, of course, I was familiar with your artwork and books, but the Bible journaling was new to me. This post really helped explain it. I’m not artistic at all so I’ll enjoy the whole concept with your free download from your previous post. 🙂 You are an encouragement!
So glad that you are back on the blog since I don’t get facebook.

    Karla,
Thank you for this post. I have been writing in my Bible for years. I did not know that there was such a thing as a journaling Bilble. What a fantastic idea! I was not blessed with the talent of drawing, but I was blessed with the love of it anyway, so I made a list of the supplies you mentioned and I am going to get myself a Journaling Bible and give this a try. If the roads are not too icy in my area tomorrow I will be stopping at Michael’s and Barnes and Noble after work.
    With gratitude,
    Terry

Karla, thank you for sharing your faith and inspiring so many of us thru your artwork and posts. I too am not a “drawer” but I do enjoy stamping and making my own cards and creating pages as I scrapbook. I would love to see some of your artwork put into acrylic stamps! Oh how much fun it would be to color them with colored pencils and alcohol markers. Just a thought for you to ponder.

Merry Christmas my friends!! Jesus came as the Pr Merry Christmas my friends!!

Jesus came as the Prince of Peace but He also came as the King of Kings! He was not born to become a King… He already was one. It is almost unfathomable to consider that His royal reign as Prince and King began long before He entered this world.

Even more amazing is that He was willing to lay aside His heavenly robes and put on the humble garment of human flesh for us… for you and me.

The King walked among us so we could see Him and touch Him. So we could know Him and love Him. So we could believe in Him and allow Him to rule and reign over our hearts in love and peace.

Jesus is King… He always has been and always will be… and He was born in a manger so we could know that His Kingdom is not about what we have or what we don’t have. It’s not about wearing royal robes or buying expensive gifts. God‘s Kingdom is about putting on the garments of love and humility and giving ourselves to care for others. That’s what Jesus did and he became like us so we could become like him. That’s the Christmas we celebrate.

I pray your celebration overflows with the love and peace that Christ came to give us.

Love you my friends xoxo

Thank You Lord! Life has been a bit crazy the past Thank You Lord! Life has been a bit crazy the past week or so but I’m so thankful God is with us in the crazy as well as the calm! Amen?

I just added these full color printable bookmarks to my Etsy shop. The “color your own” version has been available for a while but I finally set my heart to recreate them in color and I’m so happy with how they turned out! I was thinking how nice they might be at each place setting as you gather family and friends for Thanksgiving. Or even as a small way of saying thank you to the women who show up for your Bible study or book club every week. I love being able to create things that help you share your faith and glorify the Lord!

It’s been good timing for me to stay focused on these verses too. I’ve been struggling with neck and back pain again and wanting to stay thankful as I’m now working with a pain doctor and physical therapist. Plus life has just felt so hard lately. Challenges in every direction. I’ll spare you the details because I’m guessing you have your own list. Right?

But the amazing thing about God’s Word is that has the potential to change our hearts and minds… if we let it. If we count our blessings… we discover the blessings far outnumber the hard things… and our hearts are stirred to give thanks! And… if we let the hard things actually draw us closer to the Lord… that’s another blessing… and we become even more thankful knowing that He is with us in the midst of it all.

So… even though I’ve disappointed in myself for not showing up here as much as I’d like to… I’m thankful I get to at all!! And thankful for those of you who are joining me on the same crazy faith adventure!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Amen? Amen!

Love you my friends! xoxo

PS… you can find this printable collection in my Etsy shop. The link is in my bio. Thank you for your love and support!
I love my courtyard!! I would never have imagined I love my courtyard!! I would never have imagined living in such a unique and beautiful setting… so much more than I could have asked for or imagined… and God definitely gets all the glory! I still get teary eyed thinking about how good He has been to me here. My heart overflows with thanksgiving!

And that collection of outdoor furniture makes me so happy… and thankful! My daughter gave me one of the loveseats and a chair. I just needed to buy new cushions. But they come in pairs so I went on the hunt for another chair with the same size cushions and discovered it’s not a normal size. I kept praying and looking on FB Marketplace to no avail and came so close to buying a new one… which I only found one the right size so it wasn’t cheap. I kept praying and waiting. And I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was when I found this collection of another loveseat, two chairs, and the table. Yep… on FB Marketplace… all for only $150! Again… thank You Lord!! And… I was going to have to make two or three trips to get it all home but the sweetest seller offered to deliver it all for me for free… which, of course, I paid her for anyway. But another blessing! Blessing on top of blessing!!

They all need a fresh coat of paint… including the white glider which was already here… but so worth it. And I know God has not given me this place just for me… but to share with whoever He brings my way. I don’t know yet what that will look like but He does and I’m excited to see it unfold in the days ahead.

And from where I sit in the mornings for my quiet time, I get to enjoy all my feathered friends who come to visit! I’ll share more of them later.

So for today… I am grateful for how the Lord has turned my sorrow into joy… and in so many ways through His Presence and His provision… including my new life here in Tucson, AZ. Thank You Lord.

As you count your blessings today… how has God’s Presence and provision impacted your life lately? I’d love to know.

Love you my friends and thank you for being here and for allowing me to share this crazy God adventure together with you! xoxo
